Description: Poliwag is a nice surprise counter to Fighting types due to his access to Psychic and his great speed, however the rest of his stats are unfortunately quite mediocre. However he can run a nice mixed set that can catch many opponents by surprise. He also has access to the coveted Amnesia, which combined with Poliwag's great speed can make it a fantastic sweeper.
Set #1: Mixed Attacker
- Body Slam
- Hydro Pump / Surf
- Blizzard / Ice Beam
- Psychic
Set Explanation: Use Body Slam to paralyze anything Poliwag can't kill. Use one of his special attacks when needed. It's a pretty straightforward set.
Set #2: Boosting Sweeper
- Amnesia
- Surf
- Ice Beam
- Psychic
Set Explanation: Amnesia will send Poliwag's Special through the rough, combined with great attacking moves and great speed will net Poliwag a lot of kills. It's one of the few Pokemon that after an Amnesia boost can OHKO Gastly with its Psychic. Surf and Ice Beam allow Poliwag to nail a lot of the Pokemon in the tier hard.
Counters: Depends on the set. Gastly can usually deal with the mixed attacking set but has trouble dealing with the boosting set. Grass and Electric types can give Poliwag a hard time, although Ice Beam helps. Abra can usually tank whatever Poliwag throws at it and KO it in return.
