Description:
Start of turn 4
Delibird used Ice Shard!
It's super effective!
The foe's Garchomp lost 100% of its health!
The foe's Garchomp fainted!
Delibird? Weak?
Possibly the most underestimated Pokemon that I've ever written an analysis for. Delibird may look mediocre on the outside, with really lame stats and a horrid defensive typing, but if you look beneath the surface, you may be surprised. Delibird has Hustle, which boosts its attack at the cost of accuracy. This combined with Choice Band and its hefty movepool allows it to OHKO threats such as Garchomp, Tyranitar, Salamance, Dragonite (without Multiscale), and multiple other Pokemon in OU. Not to mention the lower tiers. Be careful though, Delibird needs to come in there and get out of there, as it cannot take a hit.
Set #1: Erryday I'm Hustlin' (Band)
Item: Choice Band
Ability: Hustle
EVs: 4 HP, 252 Atk, 252 Spe
Nature: Adamant / Jolly
- Aerial Ace / Bounce / Fly
- Ice Shard / Ice Punch
- Seed Bomb
- Brick Break
Set Explanation:
With an Adamant nature and Hustle, Delibird's attack skyrockets up to an insane 514! It has a mediocre speed of 249 with Adamant, but this is enough to outspeed and OHKO multiple threats, notably Tyranitar and Ferrothorn, who can't stand up to Brick Break. Speed doesn't matter thanks to Ice Shard, as it OHKOs most of the dragons in OU, notably Garchomp, Salamance and Dragonite (Without Multiscale). Along with this, Ice Shard thanks to STAB deals a hefty amount of damage even when it's not super effective, thus making it a great choice to take care of weakened Pokemon. Seed Bomb tears apart Pokemon such as Politoed, Quagsire, and Milotic (OHKO's Milo after one layer of spikes). Aerial Ace is mostly there for a reliable STAB attack / filler and you won't find yourself using it that often, since most of what Aerial Ace hits better than Ice Shard is faster than you. (The exception is if you're running a Jolly nature and run into a Breloom). Even though Ice Shard is insanely recommended, if you feel power is better than speed you can run Ice Punch, however the loss of priority makes Delibird lose part of its niche. Bounce and Fly are both two strong flying moves that can be used over Aerial Ace. The most notable of the three is Bounce, which has a 30% chance to paralyze the opponent. Fly has more immediate power than Bounce.
Set #2: Cool Shades (Specs)
Item: Choice Specs
Ability: Vital Spirit
EVs: 4 HP, 252 SpAtk, 252 Spe
Nature: Modest / Timid
- Ice Beam
- Hidden Power Grass / Hidden Power Electric / Hidden Power Psychic
- Water Pulse
- Signal Beam
Set Explanation:
While not as powerful as the Hustle set, it's safer. It doesn't have shaky accuracy, and is immune to sleep. Making it a good switch in for Pokemon that you would expect to Spore (such as Breloom or Amoongus, both of which are weak to Delibird's STAB Ice Beam). The Hidden Power slot depends on what you need, HP Grass is for bulky waters such as Quagsire, Swampert and Seismitoad, HP Electric forms a pseudo-bolt beam combo, giving great coverage across the board, HP Psychic is a nasty surprise for weakened slow fighting types who think they can Drain Punch Delibird and restore health. Water Pulse hits Rock and Ground (and those who have both) types hard and attempts to douse Fire types and on top of that has a chance of confusion. Signal Beam is mostly filler but can help you in the lower tiers against the plethora of Psychic types.
Counters:
Stealth Rocks and Priority are Delibird's worst enemy, regardless of the typing of the priority attack, the majority of the time, Delibird will be OHKO'd. Never switch in any kind of Dragon against Delibird, Ice Shard will tear it apart. Fire types will incinerate the hustlin' bird, but must be wary of Water Pulse. Rock type moves will crush Delibird as well.
